Trauma Therapy

Specialized trauma treatment using evidence-based approaches to help you process painful experiences and reclaim your sense of safety and well-being.

Understanding Trauma Therapy

Trauma can leave lasting imprints on your mind, body, and relationships. At Restored Family Counseling, our trauma-trained therapists help you safely process painful experiences, reduce distressing symptoms, and reclaim your sense of safety. Healing is possible, and you don't have to carry this weight alone.

Trauma isn't defined solely by the event. It's about how your nervous system responds. You may be dealing with a single overwhelming event (an accident, assault, sudden loss) or the cumulative effects of childhood adversity, emotional neglect, or relational harm. Developmental trauma can be particularly pervasive, shaping how you see yourself and relate to others well into adulthood. However it manifests (flashbacks, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, avoidance, chronic tension, or difficulty trusting others), these are signs your nervous system is still trying to protect you from a threat it believes is still present.

Our therapists are trained in EMDR, somatic experiencing, and trauma-focused CBT, each designed to address how trauma is stored in both the brain and body. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help your brain reprocess traumatic memories without extensive verbal retelling. Somatic experiencing helps release the survival energy trapped in your nervous system. Trauma-focused CBT challenges the distorted beliefs trauma creates while building practical coping skills.

Effective trauma therapy follows a phased approach: first establishing safety and stabilization, then processing traumatic memories at a pace that feels manageable, and finally integrating your experiences so they no longer control your present. Your therapist will never push you faster than you're ready to go.
